The Shard Residencies, London UK
We have created a sculptural lighting centrepiece for the resident’s lobby of Shard Place. The design was informed by a sound recording of London bridge rush hour outside of the Shard Place building, the soundwave was smoothed out to create a softened form to give the residents a relaxing transition between the outside world and home. As a design studio Haberdashery looks to develop a sense of engagement through layers of narrative-informed design on micro and macro scales using light as a medium.
To begin to visualise how sound could become ‘smoothed out’ we recorded the sound at the southbank location during morning rush hour; a melee of cars and buses, horns and sirens, trains rumbling over the river, all wrapped up in the background noise of human chatter, wind, birds and planes overhead. The resulting waveforms were typical of any recording in a metropolis during peak rush hour; jagged and detailed, reflecting the complexity of the sonic environment and its unique signature. The sculpture is a 10m long horizontal monolithic form suspended in the lobby space. Its shape represents a softened sound wave, revolved 360 degrees to give a flowing tubular form, made up of hundreds of aluminium sections with thousands of small connections and apertures for light to pass through.
Depending on the viewing angle the sculpture can be read quite differently. From an end-on-approach the sculpture can appear quite solid, whereas from directly underneath or from out on the street the sculpture has a more lightweight translucent appearance. Dappled light created by the myriad of apertures throughout the sculptural form spreads out over wall and floor surfaces to help inform and celebrate the surrounding material choices made by interior designers State of Craft.
Multidisciplinary design studio State of Craft envisioned the light sculpture as the central feature of the entrance lobby. They had skillfully created a warm and welcoming stone and timber space designed to transform with light – a calm foil by day and a canvas for dappled shade by night. Following our first collaboration with State of Craft on The Shard Residences, they approached us to work with them again on a distinctive light sculpture for Shard Place. From the outset, we shared the same ethos of seamlessly integrating light, art, and interiors.
As specialists in creating lighting centerpieces, we value this collaborative approach enabling harmony between objects, light and surface, and were delighted to be commissioned to develop a statement piece for the lobby. Our work is most successful when it intelligently references the language of its surroundings.
